How to Install Sims 4 CC Safely: A Beginner-Friendly Guide
Custom content can give you thousands of new hairstyles, outfits, objects, walls, floors, and other options in The Sims 4. Installing it is simple, but a careful routine matters. The safest approach is to download from the original creator or a moderated platform, inspect the archive, add a small batch at a time, and test before you continue.
EA describes custom content, or CC, as player-made clothing and objects. It is different from a gameplay mod, although both are placed in the Mods folder. EA also warns that third-party content is not pre-screened or supported by Maxis, so every download should be treated with sensible caution. See EA's guide to installing mods and EA's policy on mods.
The short version
- Close the game.
- Back up your
The Sims 4user folder. - Download CC from the creator's real page or a moderated host.
- Scan the downloaded archive with your operating system's security software.
- Extract the archive and move only the required
.packagefiles into the Mods folder. - Enable Custom Content and Mods in the game options.
- Restart the game and test the new items in a temporary save.
Before you download anything
Start with a backup. Copy the whole The Sims 4 folder from Documents to another location and give the copy a date. This protects your saves, library, screenshots, settings, and current Mods folder. EA's backup and reset instructions use the same whole-folder approach.
Next, read the download page rather than clicking the first button you see. Check:
- Is this the creator's own site, Patreon page, Tumblr, or verified profile?
- Does the post name any required mesh or pack?
- Is there a recent update note or compatibility statement?
- Are the download links clear, or are they surrounded by misleading ads?
- Does the archive contain the file types the creator promised?
Ordinary CAS and Build/Buy CC is usually a .package file. Script mods can also include .ts4script files. A hairstyle or sofa should not require you to run an unfamiliar .exe, .dmg, command file, or browser extension. Some reputable management tools have installers, but obtain those only from the tool developer's official page.
Where the Sims 4 Mods folder is located
On a standard installation, the user folder is in Documents—not in the folder where the game application is installed.
Windows
Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods
Mac
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods
If you use OneDrive or iCloud Drive to sync Documents, the active folder may be inside the synced Documents location. When two Sims 4 folders exist, launch the game, make a small settings change, close it, and check which folder has the newest modified date. Put CC only in the folder the game is actually reading.
The Mods folder normally contains Resource.cfg. Do not replace or edit it for a basic CC installation. If it is missing, temporarily move the Mods folder out, start and close the game, and let the game create a fresh one.
How to install a CC download
Most downloads arrive as .zip, .rar, or .7z archives. Extract the archive first. Do not place the unopened archive in Mods and expect the game to read it.
Open the extracted folder and read any instructions. Move the required .package files into Mods. You can use subfolders such as:
Mods/CAS/Hair/CreatorName
Mods/BuildBuy/Furniture/CreatorName
Keeping the creator name in the path makes updates and removals much easier. Avoid renaming individual packages until you know the creator's update process; recognizable original filenames are useful when troubleshooting.
Launch the game, open Game Options > Other, and turn on Enable Custom Content and Mods. Enable Script Mods Allowed only if you have installed a script mod that needs it. Apply the change and restart the game.
Test new CC before adding more
Create a temporary save or use a test household. Confirm that:
- CAS items display correctly in every included swatch.
- Hair works with a few different outfits and hats if the creator lists hat compatibility.
- Furniture can be placed, recolored, used, and deleted.
- Beds, chairs, counters, showers, and other functional objects still perform their normal interactions.
- The game loads into Live Mode and returns to Manage Worlds without an error.
Add CC in small batches and keep each new batch in a dated folder, such as NEW_2026-09-05. If a problem appears, you immediately know where to look.
Patch-day safety
Game updates can disable mods and CC. That is a safety feature, not an installation failure. Do not immediately re-enable everything and open your most important save. First check the creator's update page and the current broken/updated content discussion on the EA Sims 4 Mods and Custom Content forum.
Test with a copy of a save. If something is wrong, follow our guide to identify broken CC after a patch and learn how to check whether CC is outdated.
Common installation mistakes
The archive was never extracted. The game cannot use most .zip, .rar, or .7z downloads directly.
A required mesh is missing. A recolor may depend on another creator's original mesh. Return to the download post and follow the required-content link. Our missing mesh guide walks through the process.
The item needs a pack you do not own. A recolor of a pack object usually still requires that pack unless the creator explicitly says it is base-game compatible.
Mods were disabled by an update. Re-enable them only after checking compatibility, then restart the game.
The file is in the wrong Sims 4 folder. Cloud sync can create a second Documents path. Verify which folder is active.
A safe habit that saves hours
Keep the original download page bookmarked or store its URL in a text note beside the package. When a patch breaks an item months later, you will know exactly who made it, what it requires, and where to look for an update. Safe CC use is less about one perfect tool and more about maintaining a clear trail from every installed file back to its creator.
